Midwifery Care Management of a Woman with Postmenopausal Syndrome
at Kayon Public Health Center, Palangka Raya City
ABSTRACT
Introduction: Postmenopausal syndrome is a collection of physical and
psychological symptoms experienced by women after the permanent cessation of
menstruation due to a decline in estrogen and progesterone levels. Common
symptoms include hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood changes, and
decreased quality of life. Elderly women with this syndrome require holistic
midwifery care to prevent negative impacts on both physical and psychosocial
aspects.
Methods: This final project applied a descriptive case study method on Mrs. D, a
66-year-old woman with the main complaint of nocturnal hot flashes. Data were
collected through interviews, observation, and physical examination using
Varney’s 7-step midwifery management approach and SOAP documentation.
Results: The assessment showed that the client had experienced hot flashes for
the past five years, accompanied by sleep disturbances, although her general
condition remained good. After receiving midwifery care, the client demonstrated
an improved understanding of postmenopausal physiological changes, adopted a
healthy diet, practiced relaxation techniques, and increased physical activity.
Interventions focused on non-pharmacological approaches, including health
education, counseling, progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing exercises,
dietary modification, and light physical activity such as walking. Evaluation after
20 days showed a decrease in hot flash complaints, improved sleep quality, and
increased motivation to maintain health.
Conclusion: Holistic midwifery care through non-pharmacological approaches
was effective in reducing postmenopausal syndrome complaints in Mrs. D,
particularly hot flashes and sleep disturbances. Education, relaxation, and family
support play an essential role in improving the client’s quality of life.
